trigger / content warnings: parental death/murder, drowing, bullying, drug and alcohol use, as well as suicidal thoughts/ideation and attempt. while these topics are only lightly touched on in this character timeline, please take care of yourself and err on the side of caution. ♡• sang was born on august 2, 1995 to two loving parents, lee seungchul and choi eunyoung.
• his father at the time was a member of a large gang, but after becoming a father he decided to vacate his position and return to living a normal life.
• as it goes, no one can simply just get out. the lee family was left alone for the most part, to provide them with some sense of security before a few of the members from his former gang were sent out to eliminate the family. sang's mother and father were shot outside where they were after having put a four year old sang to sleep. sang himself was pulled from his bed and taken outside with them, where they attempted to drown the child. unbeknownst to them, they were unsuccessful- they got away, but help arrived just in time to get to sang and begin resuscitation. first responders were able to successfully revive him on the way to the hospital, after intense effort.
• after the attempt, sang suffered from intense agoraphobia as well as aquaphobia. while he has largely been able to overcome his fears of the former phobia, aquaphobia still affects him to this day. when he was younger he was barely even able to shower. now on his best days he can easily do so as well as take baths. however, he still steers clear of anything larger than a pool, and as such still lacks the ability to swim.
• having no known immediate family, sang was thrust into foster care. while the staff members of the orphanage he resided in treated the children with respect and care, the other children could not say the same. sang experienced relentless bullying at the hands of his peers, to the point where he almost drowned once again in an incident where he was shoved into a swimming pool by them.
• it's only when he meets the person who becomes his best and only friend at the time, moon bear, that the bullying dies down a little (not completely). bear had no problem defending sang whenever needed, so the older of the two wasn't messed with as long as his friend wasn't around.
• sang had a tendency to stick to himself, and as such there was little to no interest in him as a potential candidate for adoption given that and his increasing age. the first time anyone showed any serious interest in adopting him was in 2010, when he was just shy of turning 15. the adoption falls through however, and sang remained in the custody of the orphanage. the couple who wished to adopt him suffered from tremendous guilt, and ultimately offered to fund his trainee fees when he went to audition at an agency on a whim.
• 2012 is when sang was signed by next era entertainment and began his training period. he was part of the lineup of a boy group that would be called BTB (better than before). but upon taking acting lessons, sang decided to part ways with the company and pursue a career in acting, instead. this wasn't before meeting his second best friend, ji yunseo, a fellow group member. the brightest personality on the planet matched his much more mellow and subdued one. you might even say it rubbed off on him, a little.
• the boy's interest in acting stemmed solely from the idea of being able to immerse himself in another universe, where he could live as anyone but himself.
• he makes his debut as a model in 2015, and as an actor in 2016. immediately the nation falls for the man who played the role of a bright and mischievous boy. he brings the same cheerful energy to his schedules, and thus is dubbed the nation's little brother- a title he absolutely loathed. having a fake persona he had to wear as an invisible mask the moment he stepped out of the house was exhausting as he had come to find out. becoming a different person was only fun in his roles, not when it came to his daily life. his depression and anxiety worsens, and he distracts himself from the feelings by self-medicating with alcohol, recreational drugs, and promiscuity.
• in 2018 it becomes too much for him, and he attempted to (unsuccessfully) take his own life. after taking too many pills, he got behind the wheel of his car and started driving. the effect of which caused him to get into a serious accident, however it only involved himself. somehow the exact details were blocked in the news and it was only reported as an accident in which he lost control of the vehicle. following the accident, he went on a hiatus for a year to recover from his injuries as well as seek additional help for his mental illnesses.
• during this hiatus he meets oh phoenix, in early 2019 at the orphanage he was raised back home in busan. he finds himself immediately drawn to her, and with an annoying level of persistence he befriends them, slowly dropping the charade he always put on. it didn't take long for their feelings to develop into something much deeper, but their relationship didn't become official until april of 2020. since then, they have come out as a couple to the public. she is the one that helps him feel even a shred of consistent happiness, but as always, it doesn't last forever.
• in the summer of 2020, his father's past comes back to haunt him. upon finding out that sang was still alive, there was yet another attempt on his life. he was stabbed in the abdomen on his way to a convenience store late at night- someone saw this though, and quickly dialed for help. had it not been for their fast acting, sang wouldn't have made it. after a long surgery and the loss of a lot of blood, sang was settled in the icu and in and out of conscious for two days, after which he woke fully on the third.
• upon his release he went to stay with pho, and some time into the recovery process he pulled back the bandages he was preparing to change and saw nothing- not even a scar. to this day, sang doesn't fully know or understand what happened. the truth is that there was divine intervention involved, and while he may not know that exactly, he does know that he has a few superhuman abilities he'd never had before (including strength, speed, accelerated healing, enhanced hearing and vision, as well as immortality). most of the time he ignores this side of himself, although he's adapted to it mostly now. ( this was inspired by the peaches of immortality from this myth, but with some of my own twists and changes involved. but yeah the man ate a magic fruit idk what to tell u).
• it takes him awhile, but even after this he still finds a way to return to "normal" life. he is still involved in his acting career, although he does have lingering plans to get involved in music again as well as intense charity work in the future.
